We recently bought a Victorian terrace in Carlton that needed a lot of love. We hired Compass Floors to rip up the old carpet and install solid Spotted Gum throughout the ground floor. The craftsmanship is honestly second to none. The lines are perfect, and the finish has completely transformed the feel of our home. It’s rare to find tradespeople who take this much pride in their work. Highly recommended!
After a dishwasher leak damaged a section of our hallway, I was terrified we’d have to replace the entire floor to make it match. The team at Compass were honest and professional. They managed to weave new boards in and matched the stain perfectly, you literally cannot tell where the repair starts and ends. They saved us thousands of dollars and a huge headache. Thanks, guys!
I was hesitant about getting our floors sanded and polished while living in the house because of the dust, but Compass Floors made the process so easy. They turned up exactly when they said they would, used great dust-extraction equipment, and left the place spotless every afternoon. Professional, polite, and the floors look brand new. A 5-star experience.
We were overwhelmed by the choices between engineered timber and solid wood for our new build. Compass Floors took the time to explain the pros and cons of each based on our lifestyle and budget, without being pushy. We went with a European Oak engineered floor, and it is stunning. It’s great to deal with experts who actually know their timber.
This initial phase involves meeting with the provider to discuss your vision, budget, and material options. We’ll measure your space, assess the subfloor, and provide a detailed quote for the project.
Before installation, the room is cleared, old flooring is removed, and the subfloor is prepped to be clean, level, and dry. The new timber planks are delivered to your home to acclimate to the environment, which is crucial for preventing future warping.
Our timber professionals will install the underlayment and then lay the timber planks, starting with a straight first row and staggering the joints for stability. We’ll make precise cuts to fit around obstacles, securing the floor using the appropriate method (nailing, gluing, etc.).
Our team installs the final trim and transition pieces, cleans the work area thoroughly, and then conducts a final walk-through with you to ensure you’re satisfied. We will also provide you with essential maintenance instructions to keep your new floor in great condition.
Roughly 4–5 days from start to finish. Please note that larger jobs or complex restorations will require more time.
You can usually place furniture back onto the floors 48 hours after the final coat has been applied.
The full curing process takes place over 72–96 hours (3–4 days).
Solid timber involves wood that is solid all the way through. Engineered flooring is constructed using a 10mm ply sheet base topped with a 4mm layer of real timber.
The main difference is chemical composition and safety. Solvent-based finishes involve chemicals that can be harsh on the lungs and air quality. In contrast, water-based finishes contain no harsh chemicals and are much more environmentally friendly.
Generally, no, we ask that the workspace be cleared before we arrive. However, if you are unable to move the furniture yourself, we can provide this service for an additional charge.
